Calculate the olive caliber range and the estimated number of olives in the package based on the count/kg value.
In olives, caliber does not mean measuring the diameter of each olive individually. In table olives, caliber is expressed as the number of olives per kilogram. That's why we see ranges like 201/230, 231/260, 351/380. As the number decreases, the olive gets larger; as the number increases, the olive gets smaller.
At the quality control table, during acceptance or sales negotiations, the language is: "What is the count per kg of this batch?" If the answer is 220, the product falls in the 201/230 range. If the answer is 365, it shifts toward 351/380.
This calculator finds the caliber from sample weight and olive count. Caliber can also be checked directly from the count per kg value. If the average fruit weight is known, it provides an approximate caliber estimate. Conversely, it calculates approximately how many olives are in a 500 g, 1 kg, or other net package for a selected caliber.
Reading the Caliber Correctly
Caliber 201/230 means there are approximately 201 to 230 olives in 1 kilogram. Caliber 121/140 indicates a larger product; 291/320 goes to smaller fruits. Because if fewer olives fit into the same weight, each fruit is heavier on average.
For example, if you count 24 olives in a 100 g sample, this calculates to 240 pieces/kg, and the product falls into the 231/260 range.
Relationship between caliber number and fruit size
As the caliber number increases, the average fruit weight decreases. On the 101/110 side, olives appear large, but on the 351/380 side, there are many more fruits per kilogram. In the graph illustrating this relationship, the X-axis shows caliber ranges, and the Y-axis shows approximate average fruit weight.

Finding caliber from a sample
This is the most commonly used method. A certain amount of olives is weighed, the fruits are counted, and then the count per kg is calculated.
Calculation:
Pieces/kg = (Number of olives in sample / Sample weight) x 1000
If there are 21 olives in a 103 g sample:
21 / 103 x 1000 = 203.88 pieces/kg
The value 203.88 falls into the 201/230 range. Result: 201/230.
Finding caliber from pieces/kg value
If you already have the pieces/kg, the solution is shorter. Enter 244, and the tool gives 231/260.
Estimation from fruit weight
If the average fruit weight is known, pieces/kg is estimated as follows:
Pieces/kg = 1000 / Average fruit weight
If the average fruit weight is 12.2 g:
1000 / 12.2 = 81.97 pieces/kg
This corresponds to the 81/90 range. A large product.
Finding the number of olives in a package from caliber
Suppose you go to the market to buy olives, and there are packages and jars of different gram sizes on the shelf. You wonder how many olives are inside each, right? The calculation is simple. Each package or jar already has the weight information on it. Additionally, each has the caliber information.
Assume you see a jar that looks appealing. Caliber 351/380, net olive weight 501 g. 501 g equals 0.501 kg.
Minimum: 351 x 0.501 = 176
Maximum: 380 x 0.501 = 190
Average: 365.5 x 0.501 = 183
So, this package is expected to contain approximately 176-190 olives, with an average of 183.
Gross weight is not used here. The glass jar, lid, and brine are separate. What matters for the calculation is the net olive weight; if the product label provides drained weight (or net weight), it is more accurate for interpreting the count.
How to Interpret the Ranges?
The ranges in the tool go from very large to very small. Values like 60/70, 71/80, 81/90 describe large products. 201/230 and 231/260 are common in the medium group. 351/380, 411/460, and 560+ go to small fruits.
Roughly speaking, below 120 is very large, 121/200 is large, 201/290 is medium, 291/410 is small, and above 411 is very small. Not every business uses the same commercial names. Some say "jumbo", some "large", some use their own internal labels. But the pieces/kg calculation remains unchanged.
Natural Variation in Package Count
Finding 179 or 187 in a jar expected to have an average of 183 is not necessarily a problem. Caliber is a range anyway. Fruits are not expected to have identical weights. Additionally, drained weight, filling tolerance, brine ratio, and product type can affect the result.
It is different if the discrepancy is consistent and significant. In that case, the net weight, caliber declaration, sampling method, and weighing should be rechecked.
